Nathan Farrugia is a former Basketball player turned fundraiser and is an inspiration to all.Nathan sees himself as an unlikely athlete to be featured on here but SURVIVA disagrees. We think he's amazing.
He has long given up competitive sports, which he did for 12 years as part of the National Malta Basketball team. Since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament (twice) he has taken up triathlon and running to keep fit and raise funds for charity.
Progressing from his first marathon in 2008 in London to the Ironman Austria and Lanzarote, he now takes on ultra challenges including the Marathon Des Sables 2010 and the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc this year. However he is now most recognised for organising and completing his world record 27 full marathons in 27 days in 27 different countries - one in each EU state, raising €100,000 for charity and running many of them in sub 4hrs. Surprisingly, Nathan believes that such feats are within the reach of many, not the super-athletes. "Our minds set the finish line, whilst our bodies could go on for far longer if prepared enough. With the right motivation, especially for charitable purposes, many complete feats of endurance far beyond their initial expectations. You can see this every year at the London Marathon." Nathan takes a very scientific approach to his preparation, as a physiotherapist by profession he is aware of his physical limitations, nutritional requirements and gear requirements when attempting such events, however is a practitioner of Zen and mindfulness techniques that allow him to juggle such a busy lifestyle. He is also an entrepreneur, Chief Executive of Malta's largest Social NGO Inspire, husband and father of two.
